94: Where My Energy Belongs

For many years, I thought mainly about time.

Do I have enough time for work?

Enough time for family?

Enough time for exercise?

Enough time for everything I want to do?

But recently, I realized that time may not be my most limited resource.

I can have several free hours and still have very little to give.

Perhaps the more precious resources are deep attention and emotional energy.

We can meet many people.

We can answer many emails.

We can participate in many meetings.

We can be friendly and available to almost everyone.

But we cannot deeply connect with everyone.

Deep connection requires something more.

We need to listen.

We need to become curious about another person.

We need enough internal space for their ideas to enter us.

We need to share something real from ourselves.

And sometimes, through that exchange, something new appears that neither person could have created alone.

I have recently experienced again how alive this kind of connection can make me feel.

A conversation becomes exciting.

An idea begins moving.

I want to give something.

But I also receive something.

Afterward, I do not feel depleted.

I feel more alive.

This made me realize that perhaps the question for the next part of life is not:

How can I connect with more people?

It may be:

Which relationships deserve the deepest part of me?

That is a very different question.

Not every relationship needs to be deep.

I can be kind to many people.

I can be available when someone needs something I can give.

I can smile, encourage, help, and then keep moving.

But perhaps only a small number of relationships should receive my deepest attention, honesty, creativity, loyalty, and emotional energy.

Family.

Close friends.

People with whom something meaningful is being created.

People with whom there is mutual trust and growth.

This is not about surrounding myself only with people who agree with me or make me feel good.

Deep relationships can challenge us.

They can be uncomfortable.

But there is a difference between a relationship that challenges us and one that continually consumes our energy without allowing anything meaningful to grow.

I am beginning to understand that I do not have to invest equally everywhere.

Some places may simply receive my availability.

I am here. If there is something appropriate I can give, I will give it.

That can be enough.

Other places deserve much more.

Perhaps maturity includes learning the difference.

For much of life, growth often means expansion.

More people.

Larger networks.

Broader influence.

More opportunities.

But perhaps another kind of growth comes through concentration.

Fewer relationships. Deeper relationships. More intentional energy.

The same may be true of life itself.

I do not need to be deeply invested everywhere.

I can be kind broadly.

Available where appropriate.

And deeply present selectively.

Time is precious.

But perhaps even more precious is the part of me that can truly listen, love, create, and connect.

I want to become more careful about where I place that part of myself.

Not because I want a smaller life.

But because I am beginning to understand that a few deep connections can make life extraordinarily large.

Perhaps the question is no longer how much of myself I can give away.

It is simpler:

Where does my deepest energy belong?
