  • 42: When Storms Come, Protect the Roots

The road I drive every day is under repair.

    There are bumps everywhere.

The road will probably become better later. But right now, driving over it feels rough. Each bump shakes the car. The car does not understand that the road is improving. It only receives the impact.

Over time, a car simply wears down.

    It is human-made.

    It does not heal itself.

    A bump is a bump.

    Damage is damage.

    Time only makes it older.

    But trees are different.

After a storm, I often see broken branches. Some trees lose leaves. Some bend. Some look damaged.

    But a tree is alive.

It does not only receive damage.

    It responds.

A tree can grow around wounds.

    It can strengthen its trunk.

    It can deepen its roots.

    It can adapt to wind.

A storm can hurt a tree.

But under the right conditions, the tree can become stronger.

This made me think about life.

For many years, I treated myself more like a machine.

    Push harder.

    Absorb impact.

    Keep going.

    Do not stop.

When difficulty came, I thought strength meant tolerating everything.

But I now see that I am not a machine.

    I am a living being.

    Created by God.

That means I can be wounded, but I can also heal.

I can be shaken, but I can also grow deeper.

Still, storms do not automatically make a tree stronger.

If the roots are weak, the storm can destroy it.

If there is no soil, no water, no recovery, no time, the tree suffers.

    So the lesson is not:

    Seek storms.

    The lesson is:

When storms come, protect the roots.

For me, roots are the things that keep life grounded.

These roots are not always visible.

    No one praises them.

    No one measures them.

But when storms come, they matter more than anything.

Difficulty by itself is not growth.

Stress by itself is not adaptation.

In triathlon, training stress only makes the body stronger if recovery follows. Without recovery, stress becomes injury.

    Life is similar.

    Pain plus noise becomes damage.

Pain plus reflection may become wisdom.

Storm plus faith may become deeper roots.

Difficulty plus quiet time may become inner strength.

This is why I now protect my roots more carefully.

Not because I want an easy life.

But because I know storms will come.

And when they come, I do not want to live like a machine being worn down by every bump.

I want to live like a tree.

    Alive.

    Rooted.

    Able to bend.

    Able to heal.

    Able to grow deeper.

    The storm may break branches.

But if the roots are protected,

    life continues underground.

    And one day,

    new leaves can grow again.
